Machine Drawn Restoration Glass

Unique Art Glass is excited to offer restoration glass that is temperable! In the past, using restoration glass in doors or other areas where safety is a concern required that the glass go through an expensive laminating process. Size limitations were also a major problem, prohibiting it's use in larger windows, and full lite doors. Well those days are over. This is great news for many clients wanting to match existing antique glass in there home, or just create new lites in a traditional style. This glass closely matches machine drawn glass commonly used from 1900-1955. Its slight waviness causes the light to dance and shimmer. It creates movement in even the simplest designs that is lacking in modern window glass. From cabinets, to picture windows, to leaded glass entries, this machine drawn restoration glass is sure to be included in many projects we do in the future.

Prayer Chapel Tacoma General Hospital

Sacred Spaces

This is a project Unique Art Glass did for Tacoma General Hospital's Prayer Chapel. The first photo shows one of  the "lantern lights" that adorn the four corners of the space. The glass is kiln slumped and textured to create the feeling of water. Total thickness is 1-1/4" thick giving the piece a great deal of depth.

In the center of three of the four walls are our kiln slumped windows. Each window has a unique NW nature scene of mountains, trees and water. The 1-1/4" thick glass panels are each close to 400 lbs.

Below is a close up view of one of the nature scenes. Notice how it picks up the blue of the sky and the green of the foliage outside.

Lead Overlay

Lead overlay glass in the kitchen of a lodge on Lopez Island. Lead overlay is a smart, yet economical way to add a touch of old world charm to modern windows. They are made as insulated (thermal pane) windows, but instead of building a true leaded window and enclosing it between two insulating panels, the lead is applied to both sides of the interior panel with 3M VHB Tape. This is the same tape the automotive industry uses to apply trim and name plates to the exterior of cars.

Mid Century Style

A modern window with a mid-century feel. These windows were done for a flat-roofed mid-century home in Normandy Park, Wa. Each of the four windows consist of two stained glass panels stacked together to give it incredible depth. By stacking the windows, the different colors and textures of glass are allowed to change their appearance as one moves around the space. The stacked panels are then insulated between two pieces of tempered glass to add security and energy efficiency.

Stained Glass Dome

Stained glass dome. Woodinville, WA.
This dome is a departure from the typical stained glass domes that we do in that it is semi-spherical, and not segmented panels. It is in the foyer of a home in Woodinville that we affectionately call "The Big House".

Kiln Slumped Shower

Here we have a kiln slumped shower and water closet enclosure. The top edge of the glass is chipped prior to firing in the kiln. While in the kiln, the chipped edge melts and all sharp edges are "fire polished" resulting in a very smooth, organic feel. The glass surface has two of our standard textures to give the impression of earth and water, creating a very spa like atmosphere.

Olympic Physical Therapy Entry

Here is a glass entry door and sidelite we did for Olympic Physical Therapy in Kirkland Wa. The piece was done in 1/2" Starfire low-iron glass to give optical clarity, and avoid the deep green hue one gets with the thicker standard window glass. The texture was achieved with sandblasting and deep carving the surface. The final effect is stunning!

This is the view from inside the lobby. Notice also the slumped countertop that we did.
